Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does “fertility friendly” mean?
When you're trying to conceive, choose a lubricant with the right pH balance. While typical vaginal pH levels range between 3.8 and 4.5 (i.e., slightly acidic), optimal pH levels for sperm viability are between 7 and 8.5 (an alkaline environment). During ovulation, vaginal pH levels rise to the 7+ range (i.e., become more alkaline) to create a favorable environment for sperm movement and, of course, pregnancy. Conceptria has a pH of approximately 7.25–7.8 to help set the stage just right.
2. Why use a fertility-friendly lubricant when trying to conceive?
Even if your usual lubricants don't contain spermicides, they can affect sperm movement. Conceptria creates the perfect environment with a formula that not only helps optimize the sperm environment but also maintains comfort and fun during intimacy. Conceptria achieves this by combining elements such as pH balance, low osmolarity, and biocompatibility testing that mimic a fertile vaginal environment.
Whatever your path to conception, avoid fertility-unfriendly ingredients (like parabens!) and choose a lubricant designed to help, not harm.
3. What is osmolarity and why does it matter in a lubricant?
Osmolarity is a number or range that indicates how dense or "full" something is with molecules. Knowing a lubricant's osmolarity allows you to understand how it will interact with your body—in this case, with vaginal fluids and surrounding tissue.
Your body naturally works to maintain the balance of molecules, especially when something new like a lubricant is introduced.
Simply put, the closer a lubricant's osmolarity is to your intimate area's natural levels, the better it will work for your body. Conversely, if the osmolarity is far from these levels, there's a greater risk of problems such as irritation, vaginal dryness, and even infections.
Semen has an osmolarity level of approximately 340 mOsm/kg, and quality fertility-friendly lubricants have levels that work well with natural vaginal fluids and don't slow down sperm. Conceptria has an osmolarity of 300-410 mOsm/kg.
4. Conceptria is FDA approved.
Fertility lubricants, like Conceptria, belong to a special category of products that undergo rigorous testing to obtain FDA approval. These tests ensure that:
- They are safe for sperm, oocytes (eggs) and embryos.
- They have a pH and viscosity similar to fertile cervical mucus and semen.
5. Laboratory tests and results.
To be labeled "fertility-friendly," lubricants must pass rigorous FDA testing confirming their safety for sperm, eggs, and embryos. Read Conceptria's lab test results.
6. Conceptria is a water-based lubricant.
Our clean, water-based formula offers a natural, silky feel for optimal glide, without the sticky texture of other lubricants. It's also easy to clean and won't stain clothes or sheets.
7. Why do parabens matter in a fertility lubricant?
Parabens are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) , that is, substances that can disrupt the body's endocrine system. It's no surprise that California and the European Union have banned parabens in cosmetics and beauty products.
Several studies have linked parabens not only to decreased fertility (1), but also to complications during childbirth (2). For this reason, our formula is paraben-free.

8. Why is Conceptria's hydroxyethylcellulose important?
Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is found in the best fertility-friendly lubricants, and there's a reason for that! In Conceptria, this ingredient helps give the formula a silky, gel-like texture while also being sperm-friendly.
9. Conceptria contains fructose.
When you're trying to conceive, it's important to know that your partner's body already produces fructose to aid in the process, and small amounts in fertility lubricants are designed to supplement what the body produces naturally.
Semen is composed primarily of a fluid produced by the seminal vesicles, essential glands of the male reproductive system. The fructose present in semen nourishes sperm and provides them with the energy they need for movement.
10. Is Conceptria edible?
Conceptria is flavorless and scentless, as we firmly believe that unnecessary ingredients have no place in a fertility lubricant. If you need flavored lubricants other than those for fertility, Check out our other products!
11. Is Conceptria FSA/HSA eligible?
This lubricant may be eligible with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) with a flexible spending account (FSA), a health savings account (HSA), or a health reimbursement account (HRA).
Lubricant reimbursements are not eligible for Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Accounts (LPFSAs) or Dependent Care Savings Accounts (DCFSAs). Consult with your FSA/HSA benefits coordinator for reimbursement requirements.
